Master the building blocks that every great player needs
Passing is the foundation of team play. Use the inside of your foot for short, accurate passes — it gives you the largest surface area. For longer balls, strike through the center with your laces, keeping your ankle locked and following through toward your target. Always look up before you pass to find the best option.
When shooting, plant your non-kicking foot beside the ball pointing at your target. Strike the ball with your laces for power, keeping your body over the ball to keep it low. For placement, use the inside of your foot and aim for the corners. The best shooters practice both feet equally.
A great first touch separates good players from great ones. Cushion the ball as it arrives by slightly withdrawing your foot on contact. Practice receiving with the inside of your foot, the outside, your chest, and your thigh. The goal is to get the ball under control in one touch so you're ready for your next move.
Off-the-ball movement is what coaches look for most. Always be scanning the field to know where your teammates and opponents are. Create passing angles by moving into space. In defense, stay goal-side of your opponent and track runners. Good positioning means you'll always seem to be in the right place.
When heading the ball, always use your forehead — it's the flattest, hardest part of your skull. Keep your eyes open and your mouth closed. Attack the ball rather than waiting for it to hit you. For younger players, practice the technique with soft balls first and focus on timing your jump.
The goalkeeper is the last line of defense and the first point of attack. Set position with your weight on the balls of your feet, hands at waist height, ready to react. Communicate with your defenders constantly. When diving, push off with the foot nearest to the ball and land on your side, not your stomach.
